The path of 4-8 May 2010

On May 8th 2010 at the “Polivalente” Hall of the Assembly hosted the closing meeting of R.E.P.L.A.Y., at the presence of the experts of the 4 Emilia-Romagna memorial sites, of Ms. Mariela Chyrikins in representation of the Anne Frank House, Mr. Alessandro Criserà, head of the Dept. of External and International Relations of the Legislative assembly and his collaborators Diana Cristina Constantinescu, Carlo Diana and Elisa Renda.

The protagonists of this day, though, were the 130 students and their teachers from the schools of Emilia - Romagna (ITS “Matilde di Canossa” of Reggio Emilia, I.I.S “A. Meucci” of Carpi, I.T.C. “M. Melloni” of Parma, Liceo Classico “L. Ariosto” of Ferrara), and from the two participating European schools: Gymnázium Ustavni Prague (Czech Rep.) and Elly Heuss Schule Wiesbaden (Germany), who all had a chance to further discuss their experience at the 4 Memorial sites, and share their ideas and emotions.

The diary of the activities at the Remebrance sites

The visits and workshop activities at Istituto Alcide Cervi (former Cervi House, a milestone in Italian Resistance history) in Gattatico on May 4th, Villa Emma Foundation – Rescued Jewish Children on May 5th, former Concentration Campo of Fossoli and Museum of the Deportee in Carpi on May 6th, and Monte Sole Peace School May 7th, in the location of the tragic events of the so-called "Massacre of Marzabotto", were particularly involving and saw a very intense and active participation of all groups of students.

They were invited to ask question, search for sources, anayse documents, visit original locations, reflect on individual choices, civil courage and solidarity, and also to note down in real time in a diary their feelings, impressions, so that these moments did not only represent opportunities for learning, but could become real stages of individual growth, from which they could draw to share the experience with fellow participants.

  • 5th May 2010: The class groups of Gymnázium Ustavni Prague (Czech Rep.), Elly Heuss Schule Wiesbaden ( Germany) and Matilde di Canossa High schools (Reggio Emilia)went to Villa Emma Foundation in Nonantola
  • 6th May 2010: The class groups of Gymnázium Ustavni Prague (Czech Rep.), Elly Heuss Schule Wiesbaden ( Germany) and Ariosto High school (Ferrara)went to Fossoli Foundation in Nonantola
  • 7th May 2010: The class groups of Gymnázium Ustavni Prague (Czech Rep.), Elly Heuss Schule Wiesbaden ( Germany) and Melloni High school Parma) went to Monte Sole Foundation
Closing ceremony

On Saturday, May 8th the Anne Frank House expert Ms Mariela Chyrikins guided an interactive tour, based on non formal educational methods, to the exhibition "Anne Frank, a current history" (the result of the agreement signed between the Anne Frank House Amsterdam and Legislative Assembly), purposedly displayed at the Polivalente Hall, focusing on the history of the Shoah analyzed through the biography of a jewish family during the nazist rule, and a workshop addressed to the two European delegations on their overall experience in the preceding days. Parallel, the 4 Emilia-Romagna Memorial sites engaged the same Italian students who had visited their site, to further reflect on their experience and prepare a final presentation, also starting from the impressions noted on the diaries.

A final plenary was held where spokespersons from each class could share their reflections and conclusions with the rest of the audience.

All participants, both students and teachers, received a certificate of participation.
